Can a friend marry us in Australia?

Yes — with one catch. Here's exactly how a friend-led ceremony works in NSW.

The short answer

Yes — your friend can lead your whole wedding ceremony. But in Australia only an authorised marriage celebrant (or a registered minister of religion) can legally marry you. So a friend can't marry you on their own.

The good news: the legal part is small. A friend-led ceremony works by having your mate run the ceremony while an authorised celebrant steps in for a couple of minutes to do the legally required bits. That's exactly what I do with Married by a Mate.

What has to be done by an authorised celebrant

Under the Marriage Act 1961, a few things must happen for your marriage to be legal:

  1. Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) — lodged with your celebrant at least one month (and no more than 18 months) before the wedding.
  2. The monitum — your celebrant says the legally required words about the nature of marriage in Australia.
  3. The legal vows — each of you says the required words in front of the celebrant and your witnesses.
  4. Signing the certificates — you, your celebrant and two witnesses (aged 18 or over) sign the marriage certificates.
  5. Registration — your celebrant lodges the paperwork with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages.

What your friend can do

Everything else. Welcoming your guests, telling your story, the readings, your personal vows, the ring exchange, the jokes, the moment you're pronounced married — your mate can run all of it. I step in for the legal wording, then hand straight back.

Does my friend need to become a celebrant?

No. Becoming an authorised celebrant takes a formal qualification and registration with the Attorney-General's Department, which isn't practical for one wedding. With Married by a Mate, your friend doesn't need any qualification — I handle the legal side and guide them through writing and delivering the ceremony.

What about getting ordained online?

Online ordinations from overseas aren't recognised for marrying people in Australia. If you want the marriage to be legal here, an authorised celebrant needs to be involved.

How Married by a Mate works

  • You pick your mate — a friend, sibling or anyone who knows your story.
  • We do a kick-off call covering the legal requirements and how the day will run.
  • You and your mate build the ceremony together in Ceremony Studio, with my help reviewing and refining it.
  • On the day I arrive early, set up the PA, handle the legal parts and the paperwork — and I can step in if your mate gets cold feet.

Mate-led ceremonies with full legal service start from $950. See pricing or send an enquiry.
